Sho (Hosho)

Playing Chords Like Heaven

Sho is one of the three main wind instruments in gagaku (Japanese court music). You may heard sho's sounds at the beginning of etenraku, one of the famous gagaku pieces. Because the sho's shape resembles houou (Chinise mythological phoenix), sho represents the sky and the sound represents the shiny lights from the sky. It's also know as its beautiful name of hosho. Honbushi type is better than mitsubushi type and ranbushi type in respect of the appearance. Susudake bamboo (smoke bamboo) has the excellent material of the bamboo. To prevent from the damage of the inside, it is heated with the heater.
