Gaku biwa is one of string instruments of gagaku (Japanese court music). Since gagaku was transmitted from some Asian countries in old time, gaku biwa has been played from old time in Japan. Gaku biwa is an oldest kind of Japanese biwa as well as mousou biwa. The plyaers sit on the floor and laying gakubiwa on their thigh. The sound of gaku biwa is soft and the playing style is arpeggio with smaller bachi as it's seen in gagaku music. It has 4 strings and 4 frets.
